Before and After Vintage Metal Step Stool, DIY

I picked up this vintage metal step stool at the World's Longest Garage Sale.
It didn't look like this when I bought it.

This is what it looked like, a hot mess!

I started by removing the dated vinyl, or whatever it was, from the chair.

I used Goo Gone to remove the residue.

Most of it came off pretty easy. I used a little more elbow grease to remove the rest.

I found this Krylon Spray Paint in Banner Red. It very closely matched the original color. I had intended on painting it red before I knew the original color.

I didn't get a picture of the chair after it was painted, but it took two cans of the spray paint.
I found this vinyl stair tread at Lowe's.
I traced the area I wanted covered on each step and used this pattern to cut the vinyl.

I used a foam board to form the backing for the one inch foam padding for the chair seat and back.
The back is curved, so I scored the foam board to fit the curve.

The material I chose is a blue and white ticking which I tea dyed.
I pinned the fabric to the board before gluing it with E6000.

I made piping to go around each pad.

I then glued and pinned the piping around the edges of each pad.

I used Contact Cement to apply the pads to the seat.

I also used the Contact Cement to apply the treads to the steps.

    1. Thank you, Gaynell. I had a lot of "firsts" with this project, but I love when I push myself to learn new things!

  2. I love it when someone can see beneath the dirt and grime and make something beautiful and useful. You answered several of my questions about how to attach upholstered pads to metal. Thank you, I learned a lot.
